Free random video chat
Video chat with one stranger at a time
Velvet’s video chat connects you with a single random person for a face-to-face conversation. There is no group room and no feed: just you, them, and the Next button whenever you want a new face.
What you need
- A browser on a phone, tablet or computer (Chrome, Safari, Firefox and Edge all work).
- A camera and microphone. Your browser asks for permission when you press Start, and you can preview yourself before anyone sees you.
- A connection of roughly 1 Mbit/s upload for clear video; Velvet lowers the quality automatically on slower networks.
Choose who you meet, for free
Many random video chat sites charge for gender or country filters. On Velvet they are free for everyone:
- Chat with: everyone, women or men.
- Location: worldwide or your own country, or pick several countries in Preferences.
- Interests: add a few topics and people who share them are matched with you first.
Filters are soft by default. If nobody fits within a few seconds, the search widens so you meet someone quickly. Turn on Only match my filters to wait for an exact fit instead.
Fast connections
Velvet sets up calls directly between the two browsers (peer-to-peer WebRTC), so video does not take a detour through a distant server. Most calls connect within a second or two of being matched. Some strict office, school or mobile networks block direct calls; if that happens you are moved on to someone else automatically.
Portrait or landscape, nothing cropped
Phone cameras send tall video. Velvet shows the whole picture, with a soft blurred fill at the sides on wide screens, instead of cutting off someone’s face.
Stay in control
Mute, turn your camera off, skip with Next, or end with Stop at any moment. Report and Block end the call instantly and you will not be matched with that person again. Calls are never recorded by Velvet.
